Established in 2009, Gamma Vaccines Pty. Ltd. is an Australian pharmaceutical, biotechnology company which is responsible for developing new generation vaccines, specializing in the human and avian influenza market. The company is currently developing a universal, cross-protective influenza virus vaccine, GammaFlu , designed to replace current seasonal injectable flu vaccines with an easy-to-administer, long lasting intranasal vaccine.

Professor Hirst is an entrepreneurial academic with wide-ranging experience in establishing new venture-backed companies. He also serves as Chairman of Cimtech Pty. Ltd., which is a natural products development company focused on translating traditional medicines of the Cook Islands to bring new pharmaceutical, dermatological and natural beauty products to market. In addition, Professor Hirst is a Visiting Fellow at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University and an Honorary Professor in the School of Life Sciences and Technology at the Institute of Technology, Bandung.

During his collegiate career, Timothy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Kent, graduating with Honors. He went to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biochemistry from the University of York. Professor Hirst is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
