/Biotechnology News Articles/ - MONROVIA, CA, April 20, 2008 - Dr. Victor Levenson, Director and Research Associate Professor, Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University Conference will be speaking at GTCbio's 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers on July 10-11, 2008 in Boston, MA. Dr. Levenson will present on "Blood-based DNA Methylation Profiles for Development of Site-specific Cancer Biomarkers."
Multiplexed methylation profiling in clinical samples (cell-free circulating DNA from plasma) allows selection of the most informative genes that can be used as a composite biomarker for detection of a specific disease. Based on available data, it appears that different sets of informative genes describe different diseases, so informative genes for different diseases analyzed in one assay may produce a panel for site-specific detection of cancer. In Dr. Levenson's presentation he will describe the approach used in his lab to detect methylation in multiple sites of each clinical specimen, the strategy used for selection of informative biomarkers, results of biomarker development for breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancer. Using these results he will demonstrate the potential for a site-specific detection of cancer based on methylation analysis in cell-free circulating DNA.
This is the first example illustrating the possibility of a universal test for cancer detection that can be potentially used for population-wide screening.
The 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers Conference will expose attendees to the latest advancements and developments in biomarkers and predictive medicine. Attendees will gain insight into discovery and development processes, hear about new biomarkers and upcoming trends in the industry, as well as the status of those in clinical trials. Delegates will also receive highly valuable information on tools for improving reimbursement strategies and the efficacy and validation of biomarkers.
